The Post-Grad Limbo: Preparing for life after college

We all know that high schools and colleges have to teach the basic elements of education: Algebra, chemistry, literature etc. Yet, how useful are these courses in the long run? Looking back, whether during my high school years or as a business student in college, these "core classes" weren't the most vital to my future, unless I was going to be a contestant on Jeopardy. I would frequently find myself lost while trying to write a resume and cover letter, or I would be nervous beyond belief while trying to prepare for an interview.

During the months leading up to my recent employment at SuperFutures, I would find jobs online but avoid the postings that asked for a cover letter along with the resume. Not because I was afraid it wouldn't be good enough but because I had never learned how to write one!

Not Alone

I was relieved, however, to find out that I wasn't the only person in this state of mind. Hundreds of college graduates are left in limbo between school and career because they were never formally taught how to properly find a job. One example of the post grad limbo is my girlfriend Melinda, a recent college grad with honors who was also on the search for her career. After sending in dozens of applications and getting no responses, she went online to find out what she was doing wrong. To her surprise, Melinda found out the cover letter that she had written wasn't personal to the job and tended to be vague. Most cover letters start out, “I am applying for the certain position with this company,” but that statement isn’t eye-catching enough for employers to notice it. So, something like “College has prepared me for these responsibilities which are relevant to the position I am seeking” is better.

After making the adjustments that were needed, Melinda turned to me and said, "THESE are the things I should have learned, School didn't prepare me for the responsibilities that came once I graduated." All I could do in response was nod my head and agree, because having gone through the same experience, I never learned how to keep a budget, write a cover letter, or how to handle myself in an interview. I have come to notice that this is an ongoing trend, not only for college graduates but also for high school graduates who don’t have college experience. Some friends of mine that have never taken college courses are potentially worse off than me. Sure, my peers may have jobs now, but if they want careers that pay a salary rather than by the hour, they wouldn’t know where to begin. I can't imagine how anyone — parents, schools, educators – would prep me and Melinda and all of my peers for 18 years and then stick us into the "real-world" without the skills to succeed and compete.

So how can this problem be fixed?

Listen up teachers

Although most colleges have a career services office, they are usually overly-busy or don't go into the details needed for students to be successful. High schools need to become more involved, too, in helping students prepare for the working world by teaching courses that are specific to the preparation for this point in life or allowing me to connect to real experts and professionals. It’s important to learn these topics as early as high school because regardless of where the student goes after graduating, the information will always be useful. In fact, it’s essential. If the student goes on to pursue secondary schooling, she’ll have no problem applying for internships. And if the student goes right into the job market, then she should have no problems applying for jobs. If Melinda and I had the option to take a class on proper job-hunting techniques or how to manage money, we might not have been on the job search for nearly as long as we were.

Administrators and educators in high schools and beyond must be aware of this recurring problem and adjust lesson plans accordingly. Whether it’s an English teacher adding a lesson on resume building, or a business teacher briefly discussing personal budgeting at the end of a class, these life lessons are more valuable than a lot of courses I have been forced to take in high school and college.
